Sophie Simpson

Associate Director & Sustainability Engineer at Cundall

Sophie Simpson leads the Scottish sustainability team at Cundall, a firm dedicated to achieving zero carbon design across all projects by 2030. She has overseen the rapid growth of a team who have played a key role in shaping industry standards critical to the net zero carbon movement, including contributions to the LETI Climate Emergency Design Guide, the 2nd Edition of the RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment Standard, and the pilot publication of the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard. Under her guidance, Cundall’s sustainability services have expanded beyond traditional building physics and BREEAM assessments to embrace circular economy principles, address both upfront and whole-life carbon targets, promote health and wellbeing, and embed climate resilience as a core design feature.

With a background spanning both industry and academia, Sophie brings diverse experience in delivering pioneering buildings, developing sustainable building products, and shaping UK policy. She is committed to fostering industry-academia collaboration, particularly through initiatives like Sustainnovation—a platform that showcases innovative construction methods and products designed to push the boundaries of sustainable design.

In her session on Sustainable Smart Societies, Sophie Simpson explored the intersection of technology, design, and sustainability. Her expertise provided a roadmap for future-proofing cities, inspiring attendees to envision smarter, greener urban environments.
