BIM for Good

The theme for this year’s BIM Show Live is ‘BIM for Good.’

We don’t just make these things up, believe it or not, some thought goes into it.

We were going to do something around the Digital Twin but we felt this was a little predictable for BIM Show Live. The thinking behind ‘BIM for Good’ was that for a long as I can remember, as a sector, we have been critical on ourselves and looked internally as to how we make ourselves better.

We have focused on digitisation and transformation. Transformation: change in form, appearance, nature, or character.

However, if we look at the innovation curve, I would argue that our sector is now at the late majority stage.

We have an inbuilt culture of feeling that we are a laggard sector. This is largely true – however, in recent years, we have made huge strides both technologically and culturally. I’m not saying we have it sorted, and there is still a long way to go, but I believe there are reasons to be positive.

It’s probably fair to say there’s no other industry that is transforming into something ready for the 21st century in the way that construction is.

BIM Show Live has always been at the forefront and encouraged positive discussions about the future. Our world faces many challenges. The construction and property industries have a huge on many of these. For example, 39% of carbon emission come directly or indirectly from buildings.

We now have the opportunity to use many of the benefits of digitisation to address some of the issues facing the world. Rather than looking at resolving our own issues, we have an opportunity to play a part in solving some broader social issues.

We now have data and technology which can make a positive contribution. We can monitor energy and resource usage and put in place technologies to help reduce their impact. This is only one of many opportunities where we as a sector can do more than just address our own issues but also play a wider role.

We should no longer just look inward but we should look externally. We can really begin to be positive about what we can contribute and proud of what we’re doing. This year at BIM Show Live we want to focus on the positives and the opportunities that lie ahead. For this reason, we have brought together some of the best speakers on sustainability from around the world.

BIM Show Live has been at the forefront of innovation for nearly a decade now, we want to ensure that we continue to lead the way and promote the use of BIM for good.
